\nThe feature presentation for ALE’s
\nApril 13, 2006 Central Meeting will be

\n “MythTV for the Common Man for $300”
\n<\/font>
\nwith Mike Harrison and Jesse Guardiani
\n<\/strong>
\nMythTV is a home-brew, Linux based PVR (Personal
\nVideo Recorder), conceptually similar to TiVo.
\nThe MythTV project, created by Isaac Richards and
\nextensively documented by Robert Kulagowski, is
\ncomprisied of a suite of Open Source, GPL programs and
\nhas been under heavy development for almost four years.
\nThe current MythTV package is now quite stable and
\ncapable. An abbrevieated list of MythTV features includes:
\n— Basic ‘live-tv’ functionality with
\n Pause\/Fast Forward\/Rewind of “live” TV.
\n— Support for multiple tuner cards and multiple
\n simultaneous recordings.
\n— Distributed architecture allowing multiple recording
\n machines and multiple playback machines on a network
\n— Compresses video in software using rtjpeg or mpeg4,
\n plus supports hardware MPEG-2 (PVR-250 \/ PVR-350)
\n— Completely automatic commercial detection\/skipping
\n— Grabs program information using xmltv.

Bio:
\n— Mike Harrison is biomedical engineer turned
\nprogrammer\/geek. He built and operated the
\nregions first Internet Service Provider from
\n1994 until 2003, and now operates GeekLabs,
\na small programming and services company in
\nChattanooga TN.
\n— Jesse Guardiani, Professional Programmer and
\nSys Admin. Sys Admin for a small town ISP from
\n2002 – 2005. Professional PHP programmer in
\nChattanooga TN from 2005 – current. Avid Linux,
\nMythTV, hardware, and gaming enthusiast.<\/p>\n
