{"id":132,"date":"2011-05-10T18:03:23","date_gmt":"2011-05-10T22:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mail.ale.org\/?p=132"},"modified":"2011-06-14T15:19:43","modified_gmt":"2011-06-14T19:19:43","slug":"ale-central-mtg-for-thurs-may-19th-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ale.org\/?p=132","title":{"rendered":"ALE CENTRAL MTG. for Thurs., May 19th, 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\nThe feature presentation for the ALE Central Meeting<br \/>\non Thursday, May 19th, at 7:30pm will be: <font size=\"+1\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An Intro to Sudo&#8221; <\/font><\/strong><br \/>\npresented by Michael Potter of<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.replatformtech.com\/\">Replatform Technologies, LLC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Synopsis:<br \/>\n&#8211; The sudo command is a security tool that comes pre-installed<br \/>\non many *NIX systems, including Mac OS X, and most distributions<br \/>\nof Linux. sudo allows for fine grained control of privileges as an<br \/>\nalternative to setuid programs &#038; scripts, turning on read &#038; write<br \/>\nprivileges on sensitive files, sharing passwords, and (gasp) giving<br \/>\nout the root password.<br \/>\n&#8211; This presentation will begin with a quick demo for those of you who<br \/>\nare unfamiliar with sudo. The complete syntax of the configuration<br \/>\nfile will be explained starting with the simplest rules to the most<br \/>\ncomplex. Finishing with a discussion recipes to solve real world<br \/>\nproblems.<br \/>\n&#8211; I started developing this presentation after getting frustrated<br \/>\ntrying to understand the sudo configuration file syntax. I added<br \/>\nthe real world problem while helping people on the sudo mailing<br \/>\nlist.<\/p>\n<p>Bio:<br \/>\n&#8211; Michael has been working in IT since 1989 when he switched<br \/>\nfrom programming automotive embedded systems. Since that<br \/>\ntime he has been involved in projects related to moving mainframe<br \/>\napplications to UNIX and Linux using open-source technologies.<br \/>\nMichael is the lead author of the open source library that allows<br \/>\nsocket code originally developed on the mainframe to be recompiled<br \/>\non Linux: http:\/\/code.google.com\/p\/ezasoket\/<br \/>\n&#8211; Recently Michael is work on various projects from Groovy\/Grails to<br \/>\ndevelopment of iPhone\/Blackberry\/Android applications for business.<br \/>\n&#8211; In 2009 Michael and his wife Lanna moved their consulting business<br \/>\nfrom Chicago to Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>[ED comment]:<br \/>\nMichael is an excellent presenter who last spoke at ALE in May<br \/>\nof 2010 with a first rate presentation on security and debugging<br \/>\ntips for bash shell scripting.  We have no doubt that the sudo talk<br \/>\nwill be similarly polished and informative and encourage<br \/>\neveryone who can do so to attend.
