The time has come and has run
\nout and the Internet version of Y2K is upon us. With over a decade of
\nwarnings that it was coming, we have finally run out of of the 32 bit
\nversion 4 Internet addresses and the last are being assigned out.
\nThere are no more. And, with mobile devices and a plethera of
\nembedded devices, we are demanding and consuming Internet
\naddresses at an accelerating rate. More and more draconian ideas
\non the horizon have come to light for keeping IPv4 beating on life
\nsupport for a few more years. The time has come.
\n— One recent author likened this current situation with IPv4 to be like
\na huge company that has run out of bottled water in their store room
\nand distributed the last of their stock to the water coolers. Everyone
\nstill gets a drink, for a while, but the water coolers will soon begin to
\nrun out. But, it’s really more complicated than that. IPv6 is like the
\nnewer bottles and a fresh supply, but the bottles are bigger and people
\nare complaining that they’re not sure the bottles will fit their coolers
\nand asking if they have to replace them and not wanting to change
\nand how do they deal with these bottles that are a different shape
\nand size and color. And as their coolers run dry, they’re eyeing their
\nneighbors cooler… And the alternative choices for what they had,
\nthat they “just know” will still fit their cooler, and are “just as good”
\n(according to what they are told) in reality taste nasty. The time
\nHAS come.
\n— IPv6 has been with us and universally available for many many years
\nfor those who want to explore it and play with it. This introduction will
\nexamine the current state of the art and prepare the listeners to go
\nhome this very night and be on line on the global IPv6 network before
\ntheir heads hit the pillows. It’s time to make that shift and make that
\nchange and put it behind us. Time to move beyond this Y2K problem
\nonce and for all. The time has come.<\/p>\n
Bio:
\n— Michael Warfield is a Senior Researcher and Analyst for the X-Force
\nManaged Security Services of IBM Internet Security Systems.
\n— With computer security experience dating back to the early 1970s and
\nUnix experience dating back to the early 1980s, Mike is responsible for
\ndoing research into security vulnerabilities and intrusion protection
\ntechniques for IBM-ISS X-Force.
\n— Prior to joining ISS, now IBM-ISS, Mike has held positions such as, a
\nUnix systems engineer, Unix consultant, security consultant and network
\nadministrator on the Internet.
