\nThe feature presentation for the ALE Central Meeting
\non Thursday, May 20th, at 7:30pm will be: <\/p>\n

“Seat Belts and Air Bags for Bash” <\/font><\/strong>
\npresented by Michael Potter of
\nReplatform Technologies, LLC<\/a><\/p>\n

Synopsis:
\n— This presentation will focus on the underutilized features of bash
\nthat are critical to building production quality scripts. Demos will
\nshow you how to turn on options and error trapping that expose
\nthe hidden time bombs in the code.<\/p>\n

Turning these features on should be considered a requirement,
\nmuch like turning on “strict” and “warnings” is considered a
\nrequirement for Perl programs.<\/p>\n

Also, as much of the bash syntax has become outdated, the
\npresentation will explain which syntax is best to use and which
\nsyntax to avoid.<\/p>\n

Knowledge of any of the common UNIX scripting languages
\nwill be sufficient to understand the presentation and script
\nauthors at all proficiency levels should find value in attending.
\nAlthough the presentation does not address differences between
\nKorn shell and bash, much of what will be discussed also
\napplies to Korn shell.<\/p>\n

Bio:
\n— Michael Potter has been working in IT since 1989, when he
\nswitched from programming automotive embedded systems.<\/p>\n

Since that time he has been involved in projects related
\nto moving mainframe applications to UNIX and Linux using
\nopen-source technologies. Projects have included
\n* a CICS emulator written in C,
\n* a source code control and configuration system,
\n* a DFSORT like set of utilities that work similar
\n to sed\/grep\/sort tools on unix,
\n* a JCL to bash conversion scheme, and
\n* a scheme to add web service interface to
\n mainframe applications.<\/p>\n

Michael recently released his mainframe socket emulation
\ncode as open source. This code will allow socket code
\noriginally written on the mainframe to be recompiled
\nand run on Linux.<\/p>\n

Michael recently moved his mainframe rehosting business,
\nReplatform Technologies, LLC<\/a>, from Chicago to Atlanta.
